How aware were the English of their Norman/Viking/Varangian heritage in the time of Shakespeare? Would the Viking sagas have been available? Would the layman know who you were referring to if you said Ragnar Lothbrok or an iteration of that name?

Given the horrors unleashed by the Independent State of Croatia and it's fascist “Ustaša” party upon the Serbs during WWII, I've always been amazed that Tito was able to form a functional nation where Serbs and Croats had to work side by side and ignore the past. How was he able to do this?
